The Perfect Present for Your Grown Kid’s First Home!

Hint: it’s not a plant…

When they finally leave the nest, and buy their first house or condo, your younglings will be taking a lot of suitcases, but usually not much in the way of furniture.

Except for that futon from university and their big box store laminate shelving… not exactly what you’d call inspired!

In fact, after down payments, closing and moving costs, and so on, there probably isn’t a lot left in their budget for decor and furniture. That’s where you can come in and save the day with the BEST housewarming gift of all: Furniture!

Here are some pieces that will stand the test of time and grow with your child’s home and family:

Dining Room Setup

Unless it’s a loft-style condo with the bedroom right in the main space, there will be some sort of dining area. Whether a kitchen/dining combination or a separate space, you can help them get into the habit of eating at the table, instead of on the futon, by setting them up with a fabulous dining table and chairs.

For smaller spaces, the Mai/5 Piece Dining Room Set. The table, shown here in distressed grey, has a simple A-leg design and is built with the natural beauty of sustainable mango wood.

It’s neutral design and color make it perfect for any setup. The Olivia chairs, shown here in light grey, are also available in a darker leg and darker grey fabric so the look can be customized to suit their style.

As they grow in terms of homes and family, the once main dining table and chairs can be transferred into the breakfast nook, to be replaced with a larger set. But all in good time!

For separate dining areas, you can go all the way with a large and solid table and chair set that will stand the test of time, and growing families. Something like the Mai Rectangular Dining Table.

The rectangular version of the Mai table is shown here in its more natural sheesham wood finish. Pair it with the Cameron Accent Chair. The bentwood back and curved, grey upholstered seat work so well with the mid-century design influence of the table. A gorgeous setting for many memorable mealtimes with the family.

Bedroom Setup

Beds are a big-ticket item for any furniture budget but considering we spend 6-8 hours a night in them, investing in a quality piece that will last is worth every dollar spent.

The Oliver 60” Bed in Ivory is the embodiment of luxurious. Velveteen fabric cover the headboard, footboard and rails, enveloping the person sleeping in this space in cozy, warm comfort. Kind of like a hug from mom!

Living Room Setup

Whether you choose to go all out and invest in a larger piece like a chaise, or perhaps opt for multiple pieces, such as a side, coffee and console table set, you can’t go wrong by choosing things that are simple and elegant and will blend well with any decor style that your grown-up kid is aiming for.

Metals and glass work well in this regard, offering contemporary style without too much visual effect to detract from other pieces or artwork.

The Fusion collection in Chrome is a great example: The Coffee Table, Accent Table and Console are all built with thick tempered glass tops, round acrylic legs and chrome accents to create a simple and graceful statement in any room.

Even something as simple as an accent chair, like this Aleeza Accent Chair in Grey is a superb choice. It’s packing a lot of style in a small package, complete with button tufting and beautiful turned post style legs.

They’ll always be your child, no matter how old they are, so if you can help them get started decorating their first home, why wouldn’t you? If you do, share your choices with us on Instagram, Facebook or Twitter and use the hashtag #ThisIsMyChicHome. We’d love to take a peek!
